The Refracto 30PX has an optical glass prism held by a stainless steel ring. The Refracto 30GS has a sapphire prism held by a ring of hard gold-plated brass. Sapphire has a higher refractive index ａnd better thermal conductivity than glass. For this reason, the Refracto 30GS has an extended measuring range ａnd registers sample temperature more quickly.
