ITW Tiede Non-destructive Testing GmbH produces and delivers worldwide equipment and accessories for the surface crack detection (NDT) according to the magnetic powder and penetrant testing.

Beside the manufacture of standard equipment as well as project planning, design and production of customized special equipment, the chemicals important for the magnetic particle inspection are produced and packed in separate premises. Competent experts care for continuous development in the chemical laboratory.

A team of highly qualified employees and technical consultants in the field service provides a customer and process-oriented design respectively production of the equipment and machines. The development department services the existing product range and prepares the basis for new products.

Many safety parts cannot be checked according to a flat recipe. These products are subjected to detailed verifiability studies in our development department and in our application laboratory. We regard this as a most important basic requirement to solve a test problem from the physical point of view optimally and produce a suitable testing system for our customer.

A brief review of the beginnings of the company Tiede.

The original company Wilhelm Tiede was founded in Aalen/Württ. in 1947 and, besides activities in the area of the radiographic and ultrasonic testing, mainly was engaged in production and sales of equipment in the field of surface crack detection according to the magnetic particle and penetrant testing methods. At the beginning of the fifties Tiede has developed very fast into one of the most well-known manufacturers of surface crack detection equipment.

In 1964 Tiede put the first chain testing system (magnetic particle test method) on the market.
In 1971 Mr. Wilhelm Tiede sold due to age-related reasons to Krautkraemer (ultrasonic equipment) and the company was continued as a limited partnership.
Permanent expansion lead to a relocation of Tiede 1975 to Essingen.

As a pioneer Tiede developed at the end of the 70's one of the first optoelectronic crack identification systems. This system was and still is enhanced continuously to fulfill the growing demands of our customers on market and technology.
This engineering made the first fully automatic magnetic particle inspection system possible in 1985. This system was used for the lights-out 3 shift operation with robot handling and an opto-electronic evaluation.

Further highlights in the history of Tiede are automatic penetrant inspection systems for the non destructive testing of components in the aircraft industry. One of the largest systems was put into operation in 2005/2006 at a large German aeronautic company.
Another milestone is the production of a hybrid testing system that combines two different test procedures in one system (magnetic particle and ultrasonic testing).

In November 2006 ITW (Illinois Tool Works) based in Glenview/Illinois (USA) took over the business and the enterprise signed newly under the name ITW Tiede Non-destructive Testing GmbH. Our customers profit by more than 60-years experience. This know-how is expanded as well as completed and supported by a successful controlling and the assured support and synergies by the ITW group of companies.
