Bartington Instruments is a world leader in the design and manufacture of high precision fluxgate magnetometers and magnetic susceptibility instruments. Over 80% of its products are exported throughout the world. The Company employs 25 people in product design, marketing and administration, assembly and test and quality control.

The Company sells a range of single and three-axis fluxgate magnetometers into the physics and defence markets. Its magnetometers are used for site surveys prior to the installation of Magnetic Resonance Imaging equipment and for active shielding of magnetically sensitive instrumentation. Applications in defence include magnetic signature control and surveillance. Customers include the US and UK navies, the US army, navies world-wide and companies such as GE Medical Systems and Siemens Medical Solutions.

Bartington Instruments also manufactures magnetic susceptibility instruments and gradiometers for use in environmental sciences and archaeology. Borehole magnetic susceptibility probes are used in mineral exploration. Customers include universities and mineral exploration companies world-wide. Gradiometers are used by archaeologists and in pipe and cable location and buried ordnance detection.

Ruggedised, three-axis magnetometers for use in aerospace and defence applications have been supplied to NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) for use in the guidance of sounding rockets, and also to the Canadian Aerospace company CAE, for use in their Magnetic Anomaly Detection (MAD) system. The very latest underwater fluxgate sensors are deployed by Tubitak (Turkey) in a magnetic signature range application.

A range of miniature, low cost three-axis magnetometers has been developed for covert surveillance, vehicle detection and identification and perimeter security.

The Company has won several SMART (Small Firm’s Merit Award for Research & Technology) awards from the UK Department of Trade & Industry providing government funding for the development of borehole magnetic susceptibility probes and fluxgate gradiometers.

Bartington Instruments has several patents for its products and ongoing patent applications. Bartington is a Registered trademark of Bartington Instruments Ltd. in the European Community, the USA, Japan, Australia and India. Applications are pending in China.

The Company has also undertaken research contracts for private and government institutions.
